The LiMo Foundation was founded in January 2007. Its goal of establishing a globally competitive, Linux-based software platform for mobile devices has been endorsed by leading players in the mobile industry.

LiMo Foundation is well on the path to deliver a commercial-grade mobile Linux operating system for its members, along with APIs and SDKs that can be accessed by members and non-members alike.

2007

January: LiMo Announced with 6 Founding members

August: LiMo membership exceeds 20 companies

September: Morgan Gillis appointed as Executive Director

2008

February:

  • Orange and Access join LiMo Board of Directors
  • Members swells to 32 members
  • LiMo demonstrates 18 handsets from 7 vendors supporting LiMo Platform technology

March:

  • TI joins LiMo Board of Directors
  • LiMo completes R1 LiMo Platform

May:

  • Eight new members join LiMo, including Verizon and SK Telecom as Core Members
  • LiMo Operators now represent over half a billlion subscribers on a global basis
  • LiMo Board of Directors is complete, with Verizon as 15th Director

June:

  • LiPS Forum ceases operations; re-directs resources behind LiMo

August:

  • LiMo Foundation membership exceeds 50
  • Motorola's new ROKR EM30 become the 22nd LiMo handset

September:

  • Panasonic's FOMA P706ie is launched as the 23rd LiMo compliant device

2009

February:

  • The LiMo Board appoints its 2009 officers
  • Telefonica and SK Telecom join the LiMo Board of Directors
  • LiMo Foundation members showcase next-generation handsets, toolkits and applications at MWC 2009
  • The contributions to the scond release of the Platform are completed
  • Global Mobile operators commit to widely deploy LiMo handsets
  • LiMo endorses BONDI to bring web 2.0 applications to LiMo handsets

June:

  • LiMo completes LiMo Platform R2 Specifications

August:

  • LiMo announces 9 new handsets from DOCOMO and 2 new members - KDDI and Immersion

September:

  • 6 major global operators announce plans to bring LiMo phones to market during 2009 and 2010
  • LiMo announces the launch of the first LiMo Release 2 handset - the Vodafone 360 H1 by Samsung

November:

  • The second LiMo R2 device, the Vodafone 230 M1 by Samsung hits the market
  • The Samsung SCH-M510 becomes the first LiMo phone to be deployed in the Korean market
  • LiMo announces the formation of the Korean LiMo Ecosystem Association

2010

February:

  • LiMo completes R3 Platform specifications
  • Adobe, ELSE Ltd, MobiTV and SRS Labs join LiMo
  • 7 new handsets from ELSE, NEC and Panasonic bring the total number of LiMo devices to 52
March:
  • LiMo offers to align itself to the Wholesale Application Community
